Returns and Buyer Fraud on Amazon, Etsy, eBay and Shopify: How to Protect Your Shop

Short answer: you can't stop every bad return, but you can win most disputes with evidence: tracking on every order, photos of what you packed, weights on the label, and clear listings. Learn your platform's protection program (Amazon's SAFE-T claims, Etsy Purchase Protection, eBay's seller protections, Shopify chargeback evidence) and file every eligible claim. The sellers who lose the most to fraud are usually the ones who stop filing.

Returns and buyer fraud are the second-biggest topic in seller forums: about 3,500 question threads a year in the 8 seller subreddits we counted, and they draw more comments than almost anything else. Here's what's happening and what works.

10 habits that win disputes

  1. Ship everything with tracking, and use signature confirmation above a price you choose. On eBay it's required from $750 for seller protection; we'd add it well below that on anything you can't afford to lose.
  2. Photograph or film packing for anything valuable: the item, serial number, and the sealed box with its label.
  3. Note the weight on every package. A return that weighs a lot less is evidence.
  4. Record serial numbers or mark items discreetly, so switch returns are easy to prove.
  5. Describe items precisely, with measurements and close-up photos, so "not as described" claims have less to stand on.
  6. Use tamper-evident packaging or seals for high-value items.
  7. Open returns on camera for expensive items.
  8. Reply fast and politely. Platforms favor sellers who respond quickly with evidence.
  9. File every eligible claim: SAFE-T, reimbursements, eBay appeals, chargeback evidence. Small claims add up over a year.
  10. Track your return rate by product. A product with double the normal return rate has a listing, quality or fraud problem worth fixing.

How much returns really cost

Each return costs you the refund, return shipping (often), fees that aren't refunded, and sometimes the item itself. If your return rate is 5% and half of returned items can't be resold, you lose about 2.5% of units sold, plus handling. On thin margins, returns can quietly take a whole point or two off your profit, which is why the habits above pay for themselves. Our post on the 7 numbers to check before launch shows how to build returns into your profit math.

FAQ

How do I stop return fraud on Amazon?

You can't stop it completely, but tracking, packing photos, serial numbers, and filing SAFE-T claims (FBM) or reimbursement requests (FBA) recover most losses.

What is a SAFE-T claim?

Amazon's process for sellers to request reimbursement on FBM orders when a refund or return was unfair, such as an empty box or a damaged return.

Does Etsy protect sellers from scams?

Etsy's Purchase Protection program covers eligible cases, such as packages marked delivered that buyers say never arrived, if you shipped with tracking.

Can I refuse a return?

Depends on the platform and your stated policy. Amazon and eBay have rules you must follow; on Etsy and your own store, your published returns policy mostly decides it.

What should I do about a chargeback?

Respond every time with evidence: tracking, delivery confirmation, the customer's messages and your policies.
